6 Great Lighting Ideas That Will Illuminate Your Kitchen

If you're looking to redesign your kitchen or would simply like more lighting in there, there's a lot of different options for you to choose from.

Our advice is to first think about what you intend to use the lighting for, after all, your kitchen isn't just a room where you prepare food, it's also the hub of most homes and a place that people love to hang out.

There are three main types of lighting, and these are Task, Ambient, and Accent.

Task lighting is as it suggests, it enables you to complete a task, for example reading a cookery book, chopping vegetables, using the cooker, etc. Ambient lighting is intended to illuminate the room evenly and without glare, so people can move around freely.

You may have an impressive collection of fine china or crystal champagne flutes and want them to be seen, or a funky abstract painting or focal wall that you want to showcase. For this, you'll need accent lighting which accentuates certain features of your kitchen that you want to show off.

Recessed Downlights

Recessed lighting is a popular choice because it’s a practical way to add task lighting to your kitchen, with the added bonus of being aesthetically pleasing.

Downlights are fixed into your ceiling and therefore sit flush, giving a simplistic finish. The spacing of your spotlights will depend on where the joists are in your ceiling, and also where you want the lighting to be directed. For example, if you do most of your meal prep near the cooker then it’s a good idea to have your spotlights over this part of your kitchen so you can see what you’re doing (and finish the task).

Some recessed spotlights are dimmable which is a brilliant feature, as it means you can turn them up to their full brightness when you need strong lighting and turn them down when you want to create a relaxing vibe for entertaining family or wining and dining your other half.

Pendant Lighting

Pendants are perfect for adding light to a specific area of your kitchen, like an island, breakfast bar, or dining room table. They’re also great if you want to create a focal point in your kitchen that will wow your guests!

Pendant lights come in quite literally hundreds of different styles, ranging from traditional style pendants to funky abstract ones, so you can easily choose the ones to suit your style of property and taste.

Cabinet Lighting

If you’re fed up with not being able to find items in your kitchen cupboards because they are too dark inside or your eyesight isn’t what it used to be, then adding cabinet lights that come on when you open the door is a solution to the problem.

Adding illuminating cabinet lights is also the perfect choice if you have glass-fronted cabinets and want to show off what’s inside them, like your fine china, or crystal champagne flutes.

Under Cupboard & Plinth Lighting

You may think that under cabinet lighting is just a design trend that isn’t welcome in your kitchen. But you may want to reconsider this, because some task lighting may cast unwanted shadows over your countertops, whereas undercabinet lightning will illuminate them, therefore solving this problem.

Plinth lights are accent lights and are used for drawing attention to your kitchen flooring. Warm white lights accentuate the features of laminate or wooden floors and cooler white lights bring out of the beauty of natural materials like stone and slate. If you have white floor tiles or vinyl, then blue is a good colour choice.

Spotlights

Spotlights are an easy and budget-friendly way to illuminate your kitchen. They work well in big and small areas alike, but the real beauty of them is that you can direct the light to where it’s needed, simply by moving the spotlight around.

There’s only one light fitting which makes them a lot easier to install in comparison to recessed spotlights.

Bar designs where the spotlights are in a straight line, work well in galley kitchens, whereas plate designs where the spotlights are grouped together, work well when placed in multiple areas of a larger kitchen.

Choose LED Lighting to save energy and money!

LED lighting can be up to 80% more energy-efficient than traditional lighting. That's because LEDs use less electricity to power them, thus having a positive impact on the planet and saving you money on your energy bills. And, with a vast choice of LED lighting on offer, you’ll quite literally be spoilt for choice!

Vintage Edison LED bulbs are very popular at the moment because they’re cost-effective and very stylish. Try teaming this style bulb with a geometric or wicker shade and you’ll see just how amazing they look and how you can use this lighting to create a focal point.

LED strip lights are easy to install and last for many years. They're available in warm white and bright white, but they also come in different colours, like red, orange, purple, green, and blue, making it easy for you to create effective mood lighting. You can choose for them to go from one colour to another, making them perfect if you’re having a get-together or just want something a bit different.

LED spotlights and recess downlights provide the same level of illumination as halogen bulbs, but they don’t use as much energy to power them.
